WHY "STILL WILD"?
I live in both Portland and Prineville Oregon, a dual residency that reflects my love for all the northwest offers its inhabitants: high desert sage plateaus, canyon rimrock, temperate rainforests, volcanic blast zones, coastal dunes, productive agricultural spaces, and bountiful urban gardens. So much of what is "developed" is still wild in places. So much of who we are as people is a mixture of cultivation and wildness. So many wild things seem tame in a moment of stillness. Thus, "Still" is not so much a nostalgic nod as a recognition of historical, natural, and cultural complexity and the unique ability of photography to capture a moments of this; "Wild" is less a description of untouched areas or wilderness than an evocation of what Thoreau called "wildness" and an investigation of what can never be fully contained. Photography can illustrate this wonderful complexity and extravagance of nature and its intersections with culture.
